Fire Up the Grill and Wash Off the BBQ Tools!

There is nothing quite like the aroma of food cooking on the grill to let you know that summer has begun.  And the taste of grilled food — Oh My!  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.  The thrill of cooking over an open flame has had men, women, children and even the household pets salivating since early man discovered fire.  Modern-day grilling has been a spring and summer tradition since the early 1950’s.  That’s when the Weber grill was made popular by George Stephen, the man who introduced quality grilling to the ‘burbs’.

Fire Up the Grill

Don't Forget Your Sassy Apron & Chef's Hat!

Do you want to be a summertime hero to your family and friends? Well, dust off those barbeque tools and wash off the grill and become a master griller!  From fresh veggies to prime cuts of meat, and everything in between, here are some tips to great grilling:

First, be sure you have the right tools on hand before you start grilling.  Essentials include:

    • Fuel, as well as a fire extinguisher
    • Long-handled tongs, spatula and a basting brush
    • Pot holders and trivets
    • Clean plates for cooked meats.  Always keep raw meats and their juices, including plates that held raw meats, away from your cooked foods.
    • Paper towels for unexpected (or expected) messes
    • Aluminum foil, which can be used on the grill for an easy clean-up, as a grease drip pan or as a heat reflector while grilling.
    • And what Grill-Master’s tool kit is complete without the perfect apron?
At Sassy Scrubs, you can have your apron custom made for your Chef by choosing from hundreds of prints.

Before firing up your grill, use cooking spray on the grilling rack to help prevent your foods from sticking.  This can make your clean up quicker too.

Using charcoal grills

    • When preparing a charcoal fire, a chimney starter is very effective.  Fill the bottom of the chimney with newspaper and fill the top with charcoal.  Remove the grate from the top of the grill and set the starter in the grill.  Light the newspaper in a couple of spots and convection will suck the flame up into the chimney, igniting the charcoal.  In 20 to 30 minutes the coals will be glowing and covered in ash.  Turn the coals out into the grill, replace the grate and you’re all set to go! (Note: Have someplace ready to safely set your hot chimney starter down – like on a ceramic tile or a sturdy trivet)
    • Don’t have a chimney starter?  Here are a couple of cost-effective alternatives:
      • Load charcoal up in a tin can, with both ends open, creating a short tube (ie a large coffee tin).  Placing newspaper at the bottom of your stack of charcoal, in a circular pattern, will help ignite the charcoal.  If you have your charcoal raised up and off from a flat bottom, like on the lower grill that charcoal normally sits on, this will form a natural draft and channel the hot air to the charcoal above it. Leave plenty of room between the charcoal in the tin and the bottom of the grill; this will allow more air to pass through, creating a bigger draft, and your charcoal coals will burn faster.  Once your coals are glowing and covered in ash, turn the coals out onto the bottom of your grill.
      • Fill an empty Pringle’s can, non-metal juice container or a cardboard milk carton with charcoal and place it on the bottom of the grill, open side up.  Take some dryer lint and form it into a snake shaped rope and wind it down into the top of the charcoal briquettes.  Light the dryer lint and the top of the carton.  The wax lining slows the burn speed, allowing the coals to heat to the desired temperature.  As the carton disintegrates, the coals will spread across the bottom of the grill.

Using marinades. Marinating quickly tenderizes meat and enhances flavor.

      • Use about one cup of marinade for every pound of meat.
      • Be sure to trim all meat before marinating.
      • Marinate in a sealed plastic bag if possible; turning frequently to coat meat evenly.
      • Only marinate meat in the refrigerator.  Never marinate meat at room temperature!
      • The use of marinades that include wine, lemon juice or vinegar, reduce marinating times.  Any marinade that contains acid, alcohol or salt should not be used for very long, because it will chemically “cook” or denature the food in it. Marinate food in these marinades for less than 4 hours. Marinades that contain citrus juices, especially lemon or lime juice, should be used for only two hours or less. Marinades that contain no salt, acid or alcohol can be marinated overnight or, in some cases, longer.
      • Broil pork or poultry before marinating and grilling to reduce cook time on the grill

Using barbecue sauces.  Most traditional barbeque sauces contain sugar or tomato sauce, which can burn very quickly.  Add these types of sauces and the end of your cooking time to help reduce the chances of burning the meat.

Grilling vegetables or fish can prove challenging.  Using aluminum foil helps to hold in natural oils and liquids, as well as protecting your food from charring.  Aluminum foil pouches are a great way to keep tender foods moist while grilling.

Use long-handled tongs to turn your food.  Never use a fork!  Poking holes in meat actually allows the natural juices to escape, causing your meat to lose flavor and become tough.

For easy cleanup, heat the grill until the temperature is hot enough to kill bacteria.  Then scrub the hot grill with a wire brush or crumpled aluminum foil.

Sassy Scrubs wishes you all a Happy Grilling season!

5 Steps to Well Fitting Nursing Scrub Tops

5 Steps to Well Fitting Scrubs

5 Steps to Well Fitting Scrubs

You’ve decided it’s time to purchase some new nursing scrub tops.  Your current scrubs are worn, faded, stained or just don’t fit you well.  But you don’t want to waste your time or money ordering scrub tops in the wrong size.  Using size charts can be so confusing, so how do you find the best fitting scrub garments for your body shape and height?  Here are 5 steps to follow to find the best fitting uniform tops, to save you both precious time and your hard earned money.

First,  make a conscious decision to find quality, well fitting scrubs garments.  Buying off the rack at a big box store may seem like an inexpensive alternative, but you know those garments won’t stand up to the wear and tear of your work demands and regular laundering, and you know those fabrics won’t feel good next to your skin.  Decide that you deserve the best medical uniforms for your money, and that you want to look as professional as possible, in well fitting, high quality medical scrub tops. That decision is the most important step to finding your best fit, and most professional look.

Next, take a look at yourself in a mirror and be honest – do your current scrubs fit you well? Do they gap in certain places; are they a bit too snug in others?  Is the length right for you? How about your sleeve length – is that the most attractive style for you?  Too short or too tight sleeves can make you uncomfortable all day long, and a too-long sleeve length can just look sloppy.  Make this assessment to determine what you may want to change about the scrub top style you currently wear, so you’ll know what to look for in your new medical uniform tops.

Third, measure your scrub top.  In our Sassy Scrubs Size Chart Fitting Tips, we explain that to find the best fit, you should measure your scrub top from side to side – the torso area – beneath the arms.  Measuring scrubs which fit you well is the best way to find new styles that will help you look professional.  Now measure for length by measuring from the back neck facing to the hem.  This will be the length you’ll need to order.  If you decided in step two that you wanted to make changes to what you’ve been wearing, make those allowances in your measurements now.

For step four, compare those measurements to the Sassy Scrubs Size Chart.  You’ll easily be able to find the best size, and length for you there.  You can choose from our unisex scrub tops or, if you decide you’d like a more feminine look, view our Mock Wrap Top Size Chart and compare your scrub top measurements there.  Compare carefully to be sure of your best fit. You can make adjustments for a tall, or petite hem length to customize your uniforms when you place your order.

Finally, make your decision and go forward.  You’ve done your homework, and you are ready to choose your garment style and your fabrics. Select your best fitting size and the length you prefer and place your Sassy Scrubs order.  Your new scrub tops will be custom made for you, with the options you select.  You’ll have made the decision to wear the best quality scrub tops, with the best fit for you, for the most professional look.  Congratulations!

Sassy Scrubs and Red Shirt Fridays

In case you aren’t familiar with this movement, Red Shirt Fridays is a way for you and your co-workers to show your support of our servicemen and women by wearing – you got it – a Red Shirt on Fridays.

Wearing a red shirt on Fridays is a symbol of unity and support for our solders. Regardless of one’s opinions about the war, this is one way that you can show your appreciation for the sacrifices that our troops have made for us, our fellow country men and women, and for freedom around the world.

Red Shirt Friday is not just about thanking the thousands of men and women who have died for us, it’s also about recognition and appreciation for the millions who have served and continue to serve our country – now as well as throughout history. Red shirts, and therefore, red scrubs, help bring attention to the sacrifices made by these brave individuals so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.

Red Shirt Friday is for our loved ones, and your loved ones, who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for us – mothers, wives, fathers, husbands, brothers, sisters, children, relatives and dear friends. The cause of freedom has touched nearly every family, every community, every life.  Red Shirt Friday is one easily recognized way that we can unite to show our support for all of the service members who are serving now, and for those that have served us in the past, and it is for our P.O.W.s and M.I.A.s.

Throughout the country, large retailers are joining this cause by selling t-shirts that read “Support Our Troops – Red Shirt Fridays!” For those in the medical profession, wearing a t-shirt to work simply isn’t an option for work attire.  That’s where Sassy Scrubs comes in to help.  You can go to our website at http://www.sassyscrubs.com/medical_scrub_top.html and order a red scrub top.  Now you can show your support, while still meeting your dress code!  Problem solved.  You can also take it one step further and take your scrub top to your local embroidery shop, and ask them to embroider a fitting phrase, such as “Support Our Troops”, on your pocket.

To find out how you can start a Red Shirt Friday movement at your workplace, search for “Red Shirt Friday” and read about how YOU can help support this worthy cause. Talk to your office or facility administrator about including Red Shirt Fridays in your workplace.

Stress Relief – What’s Your Approach?

Stress?  Unfortunately, it happens to all of us – to the rich and the poor, to the employed or the unemployed, the married and the single, those living in Hawaii and those not….. well, okay.  Let’s not push it.

Let’s be real, folks.  We all know at least one person who gets stressed out just because the mail is late.  You know who I mean.  The person who’s whole “groove” is messed up because someone moved one of the perfectly-aligned pencils on their severely immaculate desk. Uh-Huh.  I thought so.

Then, there are some people who let things roll off from them so naturally that they rarely feel stress. Like the person who can walk around with spinach in their teeth all day, and then laughs the loudest when some caring co-worker points it out to them.  The person who remains positive and upbeat despite having had a flat tire and were late to work that morning. This is the person who doesn’t let a call to the boss’s office upset them in the least; meanwhile, the rest of would be sweating bullets.

Then, there are some people who simply thrive on stress.  That’s the person in your office/workplace that seems to have found his or her own secret supply of peppiness and energy; the one who finds multi-tasking refreshing and work overload a personal challenge. This is the one we all tell to “slow down” before they make the rest of us look bad.

All kidding aside, of course, there are healthy levels of stress – such as the bursts of energy that get us through tough situations.  Stress can help us react quickly or keep us focused.  Those are healthy stress reactions. But what about the kind of stress that has a constant, monotonous presence in our lives; the kind of stress that makes us wake up with clenched teeth and a headache?  The type that makes us irritable, and results in burn out, depression, or chronic hypertension? Financial problems, a death in the family or difficult situations at work can lead to prolonged stress.

Many times, stressful situations are unavoidable.  Our question today is this: “Instead of trying to prevent them, how can we learn to cope with them?”  Here is a list of our favorite ways to relieve stress (note how much better they are than suffering from a heart attack!):

Indulge - Go for the good stuff.  Seriously! Buy that expensive, drool-worthy, tea-infused chocolate. The kicker?  Enjoy it without guilt! Don’t try a pound of it; there’s no need for excessive indulgence and the subsequent remorse.  Enjoy just enough to bask in its excellence and treat yourself to something special.

Exercise – It might not sound as fun as eating chocolate, but it does help to work out tension.  A little physical exertion can be fun, especially when you make an effort to include others. Take a walk with a friend, soothe yourself with some yoga, go to a Zumba class, or get in some good meditation time while you swim laps.

Bond with an animal - Studies show that people with pets have much lower levels of stress.  Pet owners also recover more quickly from stressful events. Spend some time with your favorite furry friend, or go to a shelter and give the animals there some much needed attention. As an added bonus, you will likely end up with a friend for life.

Spend time with your favorite people – What better place to be than with the people you love? They listen to you, make you laugh, and they love you despite your quirks. Here at Sassy Scrubs, our staff enjoys kicking back in our comfy scrubs while relaxing at home on lazy weekend mornings or when eating brunch with our favorite people.  Our IT Manager, Jody, loves wearing her scrubs while gardening and while shopping at yard sales.  “It’s amazing how much stuff you can fit into your scrub pockets!”, says Jody.

Whatever approach you take to combat the stress in your life, remember that some stress is acceptable and expected, but too much is detrimental to your health and well being, not to mention your work relationships.  How do you manage stress in your own life to keep it from controlling you and your personal relationships?
